  • A lightweight editor. A small download that opens in seconds and runs on modest laptops, which makes it easy to start and to teach.
  • First-class 2D. A dedicated 2D engine working in pixels, with tilemaps and animation tools, instead of a 3D engine imitating 2D.
  • Scenes and nodes. Everything is a tree of reusable nodes, which keeps small projects tidy and makes prototypes fast.
  • Three ways to code. GDScript (a Python-like language built into the editor), C# via .NET, and GDExtension for C++ or other native languages.

Consoles are the one caveat: console SDKs are confidential, so Godot games reach Switch, PlayStation and Xbox through porting partners rather than a built-in export button.
