How to Craft Lesser, Intermediate & Greater Spirit Stones (Magic Stones)
Spirit Stones (also called Magic Stones) are special items you use in the Chaos Machine. The Chaos Machine is the MU Online crafting station where you mix items together to make stronger gear. Spirit Stones raise your chance of success when you craft important things, especially Wings and Condor items (the big upgrade that lets your character fly and hit harder).
In this guide you will learn where to make Spirit Stones, the exact items you need for Lesser, Intermediate and Greater Spirit Stones, and how to use them without wasting money. This works on any Season 13+ or Season 20 MU Online server. ("Season" just means the version of the game your server runs.)
1. What Are Spirit Stones (Magic Stones)?
Spirit Stones are small items that stack in your bag. You make them by breaking down gear in the Chaos Machine. You then use them up when you craft wings, Condor Feathers and other expensive items.
The rule is simple: better gear gives you better Spirit Stones, and better stones are used for better wings. ("Tier" just means the rank or level of something, like low, mid and high.) There are three main types:
- Lesser Spirit Stone (Lower Magic Stone) - made from normal (non-excellent) items. Used to help craft Level 1 Wings. ("Excellent" items are rarer items with extra bonus stats.)
- Intermediate Spirit Stone (Medium Magic Stone) - made from excellent items. Used to raise your success chance for Level 2 and Level 3 Wings.
- Greater Spirit Stone (Higher Magic Stone) - made from ancient or set items. Used for Level 4 Wings and Condor Feather / Garuda Feather crafts. (Ancient and set items are matching gear pieces that give bonuses when worn together.)
Some servers also add a fourth type (Top Grade / Superlative Spirit Stone) made from mastery ancient items. But this guide sticks to the three main ones: Lesser, Intermediate and Greater.
2. Chaos Machine Location - Where to Craft Spirit Stones
You make all Spirit Stones at the Chaos Goblin Machine in the town of Noria. Before you start, make sure you have enough Zen (the in-game gold) and enough free space in your bag.
- Map: Noria
- Coordinates: about
(180, 102)(you may see it as 180,100-180,102, depending on the server). Coordinates are just the X,Y spot on the map so you know where to walk. - NPC: Chaos Goblin (this is the Chaos Machine). An NPC is a computer-controlled character you click to use a service.
- Menu option: Magic Stone Combination or Create Spiritstone (the exact name changes a little from server to server)
You also use the Chaos Machine for most other top crafts (wings, Fenrir, fruits, event items), so learning where it is early saves you a lot of time later.
3. Lesser Spirit Stone (Lower Magic Stone) - Recipe & Best Items
What it does: This is the starter stone. It helps you craft Level 1 Wings (Chaos Weapon turns into your 1st Wings).
- Item type: Normal (non-excellent) items - armor, weapons or shields.
- Minimum you need (most servers): Level +6 or +7 with at least +4 Extra Life or Defense. (The "+" number is how far the item has been upgraded.)
- Best for farming stones: Level +9 items with +16 Extra Defense. They are cheap to upgrade and usually drop more stones each time you combine.
- Zen cost (typical Season 20 setup): 400,000 Zen per combine (some servers use 50,000 Zen, so always check your server's rules).
- How many you get: The higher your item's level and "+Life" bonus, the more Lesser Spirit Stones you get from one craft.
- Where to get items: Low and mid-level maps (Noria, Lorencia, Dungeon, Devias), where normal set items drop a lot.
4. Intermediate Spirit Stone (Medium Magic Stone) - Recipe & Best Items
What it does: This is the mid-level stone. It helps you craft Level 2 and Level 3 Wings.
- Item type: Excellent items (weapons, armor, shields, and sometimes pendants/rings, depending on the server).
- Minimum you need (common starting point): Level +7 or higher with at least +4 Extra Life or Defense.
- For more stones: Excellent items at +9 or higher with +12 to +16 Extra Life or Defense.
- Zen cost (typical private server): About 400,000 Zen per combine. (A private server is a fan-run version of MU, not the official one.)
- How many you get: Excellent items are rarer, so each combine usually gives fewer Intermediate Stones than Lesser ones. But each Intermediate Stone is worth more, because it helps with Wing 2 & 3 crafts.
- Where to get items: Mid-level maps (Lost Tower, Atlans, Tarkan, Icarus) and events like Blood Castle, Devil Square and Golden Invasions, where excellent gear drops a lot. (Events are special timed game modes you join for better loot.)
5. Greater Spirit Stone (Higher Magic Stone) - Recipe & Best Items
What it does: This is the high-level stone. You mainly use it for Level 4 Wings and Condor crafts.
- Item type: Ancient or set items. (On some servers you need real Ancient sets; on others, any "set" item works.)
- Minimum you need (common): Level +7 with +4 Extra Life or Defense.
- For serious crafters: Ancient items at +9 or higher with +16 Extra Life or Defense, to get the most Greater Spirit Stones.
- Zen cost: Usually 400,000 Zen per combine on Season 20 private servers. It may be lower on some setups.
- How many you get: The items are ancient, so each good combine usually gives only a small stack of Greater Spirit Stones. That makes this the most expensive stone to farm.
- Where to get items: High-level maps and events that drop Ancient sets, like Dungeon, Kalima, Land of Trials, or your server's own end-game maps and bosses.
6. Step-by-Step: Crafting Spirit Stones in the Chaos Machine
- Get your items ready. Pick which stone you want to make (Lesser, Intermediate or Greater) and grab the right items (normal, excellent or ancient). Upgrade them to at least the minimum level and bonuses listed above. Make sure you also have enough Zen.
-
Go to Noria.
Walk or warp your character to Noria and head to the Chaos Goblin at about
(180, 102). ("Warp" means to teleport quickly to a town instead of walking.) - Open the Magic Stone window. Click the Chaos Goblin NPC, then pick Magic Stone Combination or Create Spiritstone from the menu.
- Add your items. Put your item into the combine window (drag and drop it, or right-click it in your bag) and confirm the Zen cost. Some servers let you add several items at once for a "mass combination."
- Start the combine. Press the Combine or Combining button. If it works, Spirit Stones appear in an empty bag slot. On servers where the combine can fail, a failure destroys the item you put in and the Zen you spent, so only risk gear you do not mind losing.
- Stack your stones. Spirit Stones stack up to 50 per slot. Keep them stacked to save bag space before you use them on wing crafts.
7. Spirit Stone Uses - Wings & Condor Combinations
Spirit Stones do nothing by themselves. They matter because they raise your success rate in Chaos Machine crafts (your chance that the craft works instead of failing). Here is where each type is normally used:
- Lesser Spirit Stone: Used when making Level 1 Wings from a Chaos Weapon and similar relics. Adding lots of Lesser Spirit Stones can boost your chance of success a lot. On some servers a big stack pushes the craft close to its highest possible success rate.
- Intermediate Spirit Stone: Used up in Level 2 and Level 3 Wing crafts. These stones are worth much more, and they are often needed (or strongly suggested) for 2nd Wings, 2.5 Wings and early high-level Wing relics.
- Greater Spirit Stone: Used in Level 4 Wing and Condor Feather / Garuda Feather crafts. These are late-game crafts that fail a lot by default, so every extra percent from Greater Spirit Stones really helps.
The exact bonus per stone changes from server to server. For example, some setups give a flat +5% per stone up to a cap (a limit), while others give one big bonus for a single Medium or Higher Magic Stone. Always check your server's guide or the tooltip on the Chaos Machine (the little box of info that pops up) to see the highest success rate and how many stones are worth using.
8. Pro Tips to Maximize Spirit Stones & Save Zen
- Use cheap "junk" gear that is well upgraded. Cheap set pieces and weapons with a high level and good +Life bonuses give you the most stones for your Zen. First upgrade the items with Jewels of Bless and Soul, then turn them into stones. (Jewels of Bless and Soul are items that raise a gear's "+" level.)
- Save stones for the Wings you really want. Do not waste Greater Spirit Stones on tests or random crafts. Plan your Wing path (W1, then W2, then W3, then W4) and keep your high-level stones for the steps that matter most.
- Watch the town tax. On some servers, the castle owner adds a tax that raises the Zen cost of every Chaos Machine combine. (Tax is a small fee taken from your craft.) If the tax is high, making Spirit Stones costs more, so try to craft when the tax is low.
- Stack to 50 before you trade. Since you can stack up to 50 stones per slot, traders usually want full stacks. Full stacks make Spirit Stones easier to sell or swap for jewels and high-end gear.
- Remember: failing costs a lot. When a craft that uses Spirit Stones fails, all your stones and other materials are gone. Always compare the jewel and stone cost to the upgrade you might get before you press "Combine."
9. FAQ - Spirit Stones in MU Online
Q: Are Spirit Stones and Magic Stones the same thing?
A: Yes. Some guides and servers call them Magic Stones (Lower, Medium, Higher).
Others call them Lesser, Intermediate, Greater Spirit Stone. It is the same system, just with
different names.
Q: Do Spirit Stones drop from monsters?
A: On most servers, no, you do not get them straight from monsters. Instead, you make them
by breaking down items in the Chaos Machine. Some custom servers may also add them to boss or event drops.
Q: Are Spirit Stones used up if the craft fails?
A: Yes. Whether the craft works or fails, any Spirit Stones you put in the Chaos Machine
are used up. And if the craft fails, all the other materials are destroyed too.
Q: How many Spirit Stones should I use for wings?
A: It depends on your server's success-rate math. A good rule: use enough stones to get
close to the highest success rate you are happy to pay for. For Level 1 Wings that might mean a big stack of
Lesser Stones. For higher wings it might be just one or a few Intermediate/Greater Stones plus a Talisman of
Luck. (A Talisman of Luck is an item that adds extra success chance to a craft.)
Q: Can I trade Spirit Stones?
A: On most servers, yes, you can fully trade them. Since they stack up to 50 per slot, they
often work like a "soft currency" (an unofficial form of money) next to Jewels of Bless, Soul and Creation
in the late game.
