How to spot a good indie mobile game
- Business model. Premium games cost once; fair free-to-play games sell cosmetics or an ad-free upgrade. Read the in-app purchase list before installing.
- Permissions and data safety. A puzzle game has no reason to read your contacts. Both stores show what data an app collects.
- Offline play and controllers. Useful for travel; many indie games support both, and the store page usually says so.
- Recent updates. New Android and iOS versions break old apps. A game updated in the last year is a safer install.
- Official links only. Install from Google Play or the App Store through the links on the game page, never from unofficial APK mirrors.
Engines behind indie mobile games
Unity is the most common choice for mobile indies thanks to mature Android and iOS export and ad and purchase integrations; see the Unity games page. Godot and GameMaker are popular for lightweight 2D mobile games, and Defold and Cocos Creator are built specifically for small, fast mobile builds.
For mobile developers: getting found outside the store charts
Store algorithms reward installs you already have, which is hard for a new indie game. A Mutop100 listing gives your game a page that ranks for its own name, links straight to Google Play and the App Store, and puts it on this mobile page where players come looking for indie games specifically.
Publishing costs to plan for: Google Play charges a one-time developer registration fee and asks new personal accounts to run a closed test with real testers before production release, and Apple's Developer Program is an annual membership. A listing in the Playtest stage is a practical way to recruit those first testers.
