What ancient items are
An ancient item is just a normal item that is part of a special ancient set. You can spot one easily because it shows extra option text in orange. Every class has a few ancient sets to pick from. Some well-known ones are Gaion, Hyon, Vicious, Gywen, Anubis, Heras, Garuda and Hyperion.
Each set is good for a different stat or playstyle, so you choose the one that fits how you play. An ancient item can also have excellent options on top (excellent options are extra blue bonus stats). A piece that is ancient and excellent at the same time is super valuable.
Each ancient set is built for certain stats and certain roles. One set might boost Strength and HP for a knight, while another boosts Energy for a wizard. Pick a set that matches your stat build (the way you spread out your stat points) instead of grabbing random pieces.
The ancient option
Every ancient item comes with an ancient option. This is a bonus stat that is built right into the piece. It can add Strength, Agility, Vitality, Energy, HP or damage.
Most sets come in two ancient versions, and they differ by which extra stat they give. So you can grab the version that fits your build best.
On top of that, the item still keeps everything else: its base stats, its upgrade level, its extra option, and any excellent options. That means one finished ancient piece stacks several bonus systems all at once, which is what makes them so strong.
Ancient sets and set bonuses
The main reason to hunt for ancient gear is the set bonus. The idea is simple: the more pieces from the same set you wear, the stronger the bonus you get.
The exact number of pieces you need and the exact rewards can change from set to set and from server to server (a server is the world you log in to play on). Still, the basic pattern is always the same:

Building an ancient set
- Pick a set that fits your class and stat build. Then decide which ancient version you want, meaning which extra stat it adds.
- Farm or trade for the pieces. Go for the full set so you unlock the big headline bonus.

Where to farm ancient items
- Land of Trials / Vulcanus: the classic map for farming ancient gear.

If a server sells full ancient sets in its webshop (the in-game store where you spend real money) and there is no real way to farm them by playing, that server is pay-to-win.
