What to expect from an indie MMO
- Smaller, closer communities. Fewer players, but you will recognise names, and your actions matter more on a smaller server.
- Wipes during testing. Alpha and beta phases often reset characters. The development stage on each listing tells you whether progress is meant to last.
- Different business models. Subscriptions, one-time purchases, free-to-play with cosmetics, or optional supporter packs. Read what the shop sells before you commit.
- Update cadence. A public roadmap and regular patch notes are the best predictor that a small MMO will still be running next year.
Indie MMOs vs private servers
Mutop100 also ranks private servers for games like MU Online, World of Warcraft and Lineage 2. The difference matters: a private server is a fan-run version of an existing game, while an indie MMO is an original game with its own developers, lore and long-term roadmap.
