Indie MMORPGs - Online Worlds from Small Studios

Not every MMORPG needs a publisher and a nine-figure budget. Browse indie MMOs and persistent online worlds listed by their developers, from early prototypes to long-running sandbox games.

An indie MMORPG is a persistent online role-playing game built by an independent team rather than a large publisher. Indie MMOs are usually smaller in scope and population than mainstream ones, but often bolder in design: full-loot sandboxes, player-run economies, niche settings and old-school progression.

What to expect from an indie MMO

  • Smaller, closer communities. Fewer players, but you will recognise names, and your actions matter more on a smaller server.
  • Wipes during testing. Alpha and beta phases often reset characters. The development stage on each listing tells you whether progress is meant to last.
  • Different business models. Subscriptions, one-time purchases, free-to-play with cosmetics, or optional supporter packs. Read what the shop sells before you commit.
  • Update cadence. A public roadmap and regular patch notes are the best predictor that a small MMO will still be running next year.

Indie MMOs vs private servers

Mutop100 also ranks private servers for games like MU Online, World of Warcraft and Lineage 2. The difference matters: a private server is a fan-run version of an existing game, while an indie MMO is an original game with its own developers, lore and long-term roadmap.

If you love the community side of private servers - guilds, events, voting for your server - indie MMOs offer the same feeling with a game you can help shape, since small teams often build features straight from player feedback.

For indie MMO developers

Concurrent players are an MMO's oxygen. Schedule test weekends instead of an always-on empty world, gather your players in Discord, and be honest about wipes in your development stage. List your MMO on Mutop100, where MMO players already browse and vote every day, and update the listing with every test phase.

List your indie MMO free and choose MMORPG as the genre or MMO as the player mode.

Indie MMORPGs: frequently asked questions

Are indie MMORPGs free to play?

Some are free-to-play, others are buy-to-play or subscription based. Each listing shows its price model and the store links show current pricing.

Will my character be wiped?

Often, during alpha and beta tests. Check the development stage on the listing and the developer's announcements before investing a lot of time.

What is the difference between an indie MMO and a private server?

A private server runs a fan-made copy of an existing game; an indie MMO is an original game made and owned by its developers.
