Unity Games - Indie Games Made with Unity

Unity is behind a huge share of the indie games on Steam and mobile. This page ranks Unity games listed by their developers, explains what the engine does well and shows what to check before you play or ship.

Unity is a cross-platform game engine scripted in C#. Indie studios use it for everything from 2D platformers to 3D survival games because a single project can ship to Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, consoles and the web.

Notable indie games made with Unity

Well-known games built with Unity, for reference. They are examples, not Mutop100 listings.

  • Hollow Knight Team Cherry

A small team's hand-drawn metroidvania that became a benchmark for the genre.

  • Cuphead Studio MDHR

    Boss-rush run-and-gun with frame-by-frame 1930s cartoon animation.

  • Among Us Innersloth

Social deduction game from a tiny studio that exploded years after launch.

  • Outer Wilds Mobius Digital

Time-loop exploration set in a handcrafted miniature solar system.

  • Subnautica Unknown Worlds

Underwater survival in a fully 3D open world.

  • Valheim Iron Gate

Viking survival co-op that sold millions during Early Access.

  • Lethal Company Zeekerss

Solo-developed co-op horror that became a streaming hit.

  • Cult of the Lamb Massive Monster

Roguelite dungeons mixed with a cult-management colony sim.

Why indie developers choose Unity

  • C# and a huge knowledge base. Tutorials, courses, forum answers and open-source tools exist for almost every problem a small team runs into.
  • Platform reach. Desktop, Android and iOS, consoles (with approval from the platform holder) and web builds come from one project, which is why Unity dominates indie mobile.
  • The Asset Store. Art, tools and complete systems a solo developer can buy instead of building, which saves months on a small project.
  • 2D and 3D in one editor. Tilemaps and sprite tools for 2D, and scalable render pipelines (URP and HDRP) for 3D.
  • Multiplayer options. Unity's own Netcode for GameObjects and Netcode for Entities, plus popular third-party stacks such as Mirror, Fish-Net and Photon.

On cost: Unity Personal is free below a revenue and funding threshold, with paid plans above it. In 2024 Unity cancelled the per-install Runtime Fee it had announced in 2023 after strong pushback from developers, so always check Unity's current plan terms before you budget.

What to check before playing a Unity game

The engine says little about quality on its own: Unity runs both award winners and quick asset flips. Judge the game, not the logo. Look for real gameplay in the trailer, a store page with recent updates, and system requirements that match your hardware.

On PC, check Steam Deck compatibility and controller support if you play on a handheld. On mobile, read the store's data-safety and in-app purchase details: a premium price or a fair free-to-play model is a good sign, an ad after every level is not. Our indie mobile games page collects Android and iOS listings in one place.

Listing your Unity game on Mutop100

  • Pick Unity as the engine so the game appears on this page and in engine filters.
  • Lead the short pitch with genre and hook, for example "Co-op roguelite where your ship is the dungeon", not with the engine.
  • Add your Steam, itch.io or mobile store links: they become buttons on your game page and in the listing.
  • Upload 16:9 screenshots and a YouTube trailer of real gameplay; the first screenshot becomes your card image.
  • Share your vote link and live rank badge on your website, devlog and Discord to climb the Unity ranking.

Unity games: frequently asked questions

Is Unity free for indie developers?

Unity Personal costs nothing up to a revenue and funding limit set in Unity's terms; above it you need a paid plan. The Runtime Fee announced in 2023 was cancelled in 2024. Check Unity's current pricing page for the exact thresholds.

What programming language does Unity use?

C#. Unity also has visual scripting, but most production code, tutorials and Asset Store tools assume C#.

Can Unity games run in a web browser?

Yes. Unity can build for the web, which suits game-jam entries and demos. Large 3D games usually ship as downloads because of loading size and memory limits.

Which famous indie games are made with Unity?

Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Among Us, Outer Wilds, Subnautica, Valheim, Lethal Company and Cult of the Lamb are all built in Unity.
